Honestly, these French.” Honestly, have I mentioned lately how much I enjoy reading Chris McGrath’s Independent columns? Today’s piece comes from Goldikova’s barn, where trainer Freddie Head took questions about the 5-year-old mare who may beat Zenyatta to the punch as the first horse to win three consecutive Breeders’ Cup races. Not that anything is to be assumed. “Gio Ponti, if he runs, will be the one to beat this year I suppose,” Head told the Racing Post, speculating on possible challengers in the Mile.

Mr. Head says “But what can I say is that some Group Ones in America are more like Group One and a half. They don’t always meet together with the best, with the colts, with three-year-olds and four-year-olds…”

Ok, I can reason with that. But about mentioning the fact that Zenyatta’ Classic with have six horses that have won a million dollars this year, not counting Zenyatta and Goldikova’s Turf Mile will not a single million dollar earner this year.

Or how about the fact that the horses that Zenyatta beat in the Classic have now won an incredible 30 Grade 1 races, while the field that Goldikova beat has won 6 Grade 1 races…
