Laurel Play #2

No Laurel play for me yesterday, with Gust and others scratched from the eighth after Friday’s races were taken off the turf. I’ll try again today, in the sixth, a six furlong maiden special for babies with a standout firster in X Rated Cat, who debuts for trainer Timothy Salzman off a string of strong workouts. X Rated Cat is by prepotent sire Storm Cat and out of champion filly Xtra Heat, whose first foal to race, Southwestern Heat, won first out for Salzman in April and then went on to place behind Street Magician in the Hirsch Jacobs Stakes on the Preakness undercard. Play: $20 to win if odds are 2-1 or better, and I’ll try for the exacta using X Rated Cat, Wonder Mon and Take a Leap …

You had to figure something was amiss with X Rated Cat when the horse only fetched $125K at auction, even though mama Xtra Heat won just about everything and her papa, Storm Cat, stands for $500K per session. And, indeed, on the track, the horse looked all crooked and weird in the rear. Good speed, as expected, but you need to be put together properly to make it around the track when running that fast. Meantime, anything out of the winner’s dam is a Runnin Wonder. . .
Quick note: Merv Griffin desperately wanted to get into the Kentucky Derby this spring, but did right by Cobalt Blue by not running him just to run. Merv knew he had prostate cancer and not long to live, but he didn’t put his own self-interest first, even with mortality staring him in the eye and all the money in the world. I believe in show business that’s called a class act.
