NYRA Gate Crew Changes

NYRA named a new starter and announced semi-retired starter Bob Duncan is coming back in an expanded consultant role in a press release issued today:

The New York Racing Association today announced the promotion of Roy Williamson to the position of starter, replacing Richard Brosseau, who will begin retirement after 31 years with the NYRA starting gate crew. Brosseau was NYRA’s starter for the last four years. Williamson joined NYRA in 1985 as an assistant starter.

In addition, Bob Duncan, NYRA’s starter from 1970 to 2004, has agreed to expand his consultant role for NYRA. Duncan, a consultant in starting gate operations to tracks around the world, conducts gate schooling at Saratoga’s Oklahoma Training Track from April through October. Starting immediately and extending through the Belmont Fall Championship meet (September 7 – October 31), Duncan will be responsible for a comprehensive review of all starting gate protocols and procedures.

The shakeup is surely a reaction to the recent spate of gate incidents that have resulted in more than $1.6 million of handle lost to refunded wagers and vociferous complaints from horseplayers, jockeys, and owners.

More from DRF: “We’ve had several meetings with the jockeys, trainers, and racing officials regarding the gate situation over the last couple of weeks,” NYRA president Charlie Hayward said. “We have gotten away from some of the procedures and protocols that had worked successfully in the past and we feel with the promotion of Roy and the availability of Bobby that we will be able to put most of these problems behind us.”

The New York gate crew is one of the worst in the country. I have never seen more incompetence with a gate crew in my life.

THE NEW YORK RACING CREW WAS THE BEST AT ONE TIME , WHEN THINGS CHANGED WAS WHEN DUNCAN LEFT. BUT NOW THAT ROY WILLIAMSON IS THE STARTER WHO WORKED UNDER DUNCAN FOR YEARS THE NEW YORK GATE CREW WILL BE THE BEST AGAIN.
MY FAMILY HAS BEEN IN THE RACING BUSINESS FOR GENERATIONS AND ROY GREW UP WORKING WITH THE HORSE AT THE TRACK AND HE IS A GREAT HORSEMEN AND I’M PROUD TO SAY HE IS MY BROTHER AND AS A WILLIAMSON BY NAME HE IS TRULY A PASCUMA IN OUR EYES.

NYRA never getting out of Bankruptcy! Former starter worked under Duncan as well, actually even longer than Williamson. On the day of the ‘BIG’ refund Brosseau was not even there that day – Williamson was in charge. Contessa is right and has so much more to say I am sure. It was his horse and he is defending Brosseau – he knows the truth. NYRA has to have someone take the fall. If Williamson is so capable why is Duncan back helping- NYRA Press release said Duncan contracted until the end of October at least. Williamson – A supposed seasoned Vet with horses. Really? With 20 Years of experience on the gate then why does Williamson need Duncan? Oh that’s right NYRA trying to get out of bankruptcy so hiring an overpaid contractor to ensure no mistakes by the seasoned horse veteran….then again you may be right ‘good thing NYRA’ …that makes sense why they are spending so much money… to watch his back. Only two guys can handle that gate- that crew- Duncan and Brosseau.

I’m always amused by those small minds who criticize when they have no idea about what they’re talking. Roy Williamson is a brilliant, loving, intelligent and insightful horseman–and will excel in his new position as Starter. The magpies whose wretched self-esteem requires that they dis others are usually those who have no experience, whatsoever, in the arena. I’m guessing that these armchair quarterbacks–in this case, OTB drunks and degenerate bettors who’ve never even TOUCHED a horse, never mind worked with them–are the empty kettles making the most noise. Put down the beer; turn off the remote and drag yourself into a small stall with a 1200-pound animal who’s frightened out of its skull. Get that animal safely into that small space, then safely OUT of it–then tell me that Roy–or any other Starter, NYRA or otherwise–isn’t gifted. The gate crew is populated by brave, smart, loving horsemen–to think otherwise, or that Roy isn’t brilliant in his job–merely speaks of your own ignorance.
It’s so easy to write and speak negative things about someone you’ve never met, and with whom you’ve never worked, isn’t it? Spend more time working with Thoroughbreds, and less time blogging. You’ll learn something about the horses themselves; the people who work with them; and perhaps about yourself.
