Big Morning for BC Works

Breeders’ Cup contenders worked out at tracks across the country this morning, putting in their final preps for next weekend’s Championship races. According to Pletcher, Baffert, Violette, et al., there’s not much to report, everyone’s doing fine, every work went as expected. The exception was Discreet Cat, who breezed a bullet five furlongs in :57.46 at Belmont. “It was faster than I wanted, but good horses do that,” said assistant trainer Rick Mettee. “I was looking for something around 1:00” (Blood-Horse). Too quick? Or a sign that the Cigar Mile-winning monster is back, ready to run his best in Friday’s Dirt Mile?

Discreet Cat had never seen the kind of 44 2/5 speed he faced in the Vosburgh off a six-month layoff, at a distance that didn’t suit him. He ran surprisingly well, considering, even though he looked like he was about to burrow into the ground on the turn. Training him up to the Dubai World Cup was not only idiotic, but an act of impudence by Godolphin. He was possibly the best horse in the world, but not a mythical beast. It looked like they ruined him in that race and to come back in a GI at 6f after the layoff just looked like shoveling dirt onto the coffin. Only fools bet on him that day. Come Friday, though, I’m not so sure he won’t crush this field. The pace of Wanderin Boy (and maybe Commentator) will be rock solid but more of a G2-3 quality pace, something Discreet Cat should be able to stalk easily. How about boxing him up w/ Xchanger? — J.S.
