Fair Grounds Saturday

I only had time to print out one set of past performances before heading to the airport on Thursday, but that set happened to be Saturday’s 12-race extravaganza at the Fair Grounds, a card rich enough to get me two-thirds of the way from New York to Texas. Full field maidens and allowances bookend six stupendous stakes races, including the very exciting Louisiana Derby, in which Pyro has the edge with triple-digit Beyers, recency, and some training with the reigning Horse of the Year, but there’s no reason Tale of Ekati and Majestic Warrior shouldn’t be running with him in the stretch past J Be K, the likely pacesetter and unintentional rabbit (or lone speed winner — if you’re looking for a way to beat Pyro with a longer price, that’s not a bad angle, and J Be K is fast — he did break a track record at Saratoga in his debut). Unfortunately, I’ll miss seeing the Louisiana Derby and equally deep Gotham Stakes live and will have to settle for catching up with replays on Sunday, since I’m in Austin this weekend for the intensive geekfest known as SXSW Interactive. No racing here, but plenty of technology and hopefully, lots of inspiration for bringing the two together.

Don’t you kill a whole (expensive) cartridge of black ink when you print out the card?

I get 10-12 full cards out of an ink cartridge, which works out to about $3 apiece. For that reason, I rarely print cards; last Thursday was an exception, since the Fair Grounds card was so fantastic and I really needed amusements for travel. I would have tried to print Aqueduct, as well, if only NYRA had drawn by Thursday morning.
