The Spoiler

Jockey Edgar Prado, named to ride Casino Drive in the Belmont Stakes, knows how to dash Triple Crown dreams:

He has ridden in eight Belmont Stakes and has two victories to his credit, with both scores — in 2002 aboard Sarava and in 2004 with Birdstone — spoiling the respective Triple Crown bids of War Emblem and Smarty Jones.

He’s the perfect rider for Big Brown’s presumed main rival.
Casino Drive, looking “elegant,” half-worked, half-galloped in a time too slow to officially credit on Wednesday morning at Belmont. “He doesn’t need to go fast,” said racing manager Nobutaka Tada (DRF).

Beware the chalk pick, many have gone down this road and lost. I agree, Prado is the perfect pick for this horse.

Right Bellwether, because in the last decade we haven’t seen Silver Charm, Real Quiet, Charasmatic, War Emblem, Funny Cide or Smarty Jones all win the first two and then fail in the final leg…
How many of those horses were touted as unbeatable going into the Belmont? At least three of them — those who forget history are doomed…

The only horse I remember being touted as “unbeatable” going into the Belmont was Smarty Jones, and he had his doubters too.
Charismatic, Funny Cide, and War Emblem were all easy tosses. Real Quiet and Silver Charm were both capable of winning, but hardly cinches.
If not for Casino Drive, Big Brown would be in the Smarty category.

Dare I say that the Belmont is run over a European distance, which curtails the ability of some horses with staunch US breeding?
Big Brown shows a tendency to get this distance of ground. Even if put under pressure this time I would expect him to prevail.
