Finally

Some good news from trouble-plagued trainer Rick Dutrow, reports ESPN:

Calls to Dutrow for comment Monday were not returned, and he has stated he’s sworn off interviews for a while.

Let’s all enjoy the peace and quiet.
Related: Big Brown was unhurried in his first workout since the Belmont Stakes, going five furlongs in 1:06.73 at Aqueduct this morning. As in his work before the Belmont, Big Brown drifted out going into the turn. “Nice easy breeze,” said Dutrow after. As for the quarter crack, “It’s all good.”

Wait a minute, on Monday he stated he’s sworn off interviews, but you quote him talking today? Is that not an interview, even if it is a short one?

I found that funny too, along with the detail that he was accompanied by an ESPN camera this morning — it does seem incongruous, but I’d guess what he meant is that there’ll be no more press conferences. It’s hardly practical for him to stop talking to any press ever, after all, as long as Big Brown is in his barn.

As a huge big Brown fan, I am troubled by Michelle Nevin’s reaction to the colt’s Tim Conway-as-the-old-man workout yesterday: “Nevin was tight-lipped about the move, saying simply, ‘Nothing special. Basic stuff.'” (DRF) It’s truly depressing when you love a horse and he’s not all there to show the talent — like trying to play Bach with pulled fingernails — or outwardly healed fingernails that still hurt underneath. I wonder if an expert knows … if Brown had six months — make it a year — to rest his hooves, would his feet be much sounder, or would the same issues keep arising? Not that it matters: This time next year Brown’s playing White (Barry) and firing his pedicurist if everything’s not perfect.
