Trainer Allen Jerkens, 81, on why he doesn’t think of retiring:

“This is a lot better than staying home and doing nothing,” he said. “It’s wonderful to be out here and see all your friends and win a race every once in a while. It’s just wonderful.”

Zenyatta and Rachel Alexandra both worked on Monday morning. The big mare worked five furlongs handily in 1:01.20 at Hollywood, in company with an allowance-winning stablemate, while the reigning HOTY did the same in 1:01.30 over the Oklahoma training track at Saratoga.
