Character Unbecoming

Roguish trainer Rick Dutrow is being called to account:

In a five-point “show cause” notice ordering Dutrow to appear before the board on March 30 and 31, the racing board states that the trainer is a “person whose conduct at racetracks in New York state and elsewhere has been improper, obnoxious, unbecoming and detrimental to the best interests of racing.”

I may have been wrong last month about the NYSRWB.

This feels pretty capricious & idiosyncratic to me. Why go after Dutrow and not others who offend equally? I don’t get any sense of a process here for suggesting that someone be ruled off…it feels rather like a bully pulpit and taking advantage of mob mentality for PR’s sake.

I’ve been waiting for what seems like an eternity to finally see someone with enough balls to actually go after this repeating goon. He has besmirched the good name of Dutrow in racing long enough.

Have others offended equally?

According to Drape’s article from last fall, it would seem so.

Drape’s story points up how subjective the whole system is; the case against Dutrow is certainly so, which isn’t to say it’s without merit.
