It’s gotten to the point where there are too many variables being considered. You can probably take any winner of the Derby and find something s/he did that no other winner had done in awhile.

The seven-week layoff for FF and the no running at 2 for Dunkirk will be the big ones this year, though, and I’m inclined to toss both.

Yes, and this year, I’m reeling in my obsession with historical criteria after going a little overboard the past two Derbies, keeping it to basics such as juvenile form and two-turn prep, and what each starter has actually done this spring. (We’ll see how this works out for me — I have a lousy Derby wagering record.)

Hey, our pick last year, Gayego, looks like a serious horse. He’s in the Godolphin Mile tomorrow.

I’m a big believer in the juvenile form as an indicator of being a top-class animal early in a 3YO season.
