New Owners Left Out?

Maybe: “Existing and potential owners are being victimized by two market heavyweights that arguably could be considered discouraging to the game’s growth. That’s of far greater importance to the state of horse racing than any personal axes we have to grind as horseplayers yearning to see our favorite stars race into their golden years” (ESPN).

Meh.
“All breeders should send thank you cards to these barons of bloodstock, since their insane bidding wars have driven up the price on just about every horse prancing through a sales ring. While most every other sector of the industry scrapes to make ends meet, gavels are pounding out record prices regularly.”
That’s not really rooted in reality…perhaps I am being persnickety over the phrase “all breeders”, because let’s face it, it is only a few who reach those heights. The top of the bloodstock market is an exciting place to be, for sure, and there’s serious profits to be made. But a few days into, say, the Keeneland yearling sale, nobody needs pen thanks to anyone. Several folks don’t break even. And let us not forget that The Green Monkey was sold at sale for “the big tag” by pinhookers, not his breeders. FWIW.
Further, I have a hard time believing Satish Sanaan or Jess Jackson ever pondered “Gee, I would really like a great racehorse, but I bet Coolmore would just outbid me.” ;) With app. 36,000 registered thoroughbreds born each year, there’s more than enough to go around.

Good point, Jolene. Many modestly priced young thoroughbreds were sold at auction this week. Any distortion is at the top and affects very few …
