No Bounce for Lawyer Ron

So says the Beyer: Lawyer Ron’s Woodward speed figure came back as 118 119*, two points higher than the figure he earned winning the Whitney in record time five weeks ago.
*Adjusted, and still two points higher than the Whitney, which was upped to 117. Dick Jerardi explains (DRF+).

And Midnight Lute, who didn’t look like he was going particularly fast, earned a 124 — tops for the year.
Although they are all scheduled to be retired at the end of the year (Thanks, Darley!), three of the best 3-year-olds will make a fine BC Classic in a battle against the Lawyer. Pletcher clearly did something Holthius could not — calm down a headstrong, long-winded speedball who was his own worst enemy. His talent was undeniable as a 3-year-old, although his Derby quest was hopeless. The Pletcher outfit should be admired for doing the work necessary to get the best out a horse, once considered a cut below, now in position to be named horse of the year.
