Derby Paradox

The horse who wins the Kentucky Derby becomes exceptional by virtue of winning the Derby, but that horse is not exceptional before the Derby — merely above average. And yes, this includes Giacomo.

I don’t get this. Are you saying that winning the Derby is enough to be considered exceptional?

No, I was musing more generally on handicapping the Derby and perceptions of Derby winners …

I always enjoy how the Derby winner goes from being medium to high odds to being crazy-short odds in the Preakness… it’s like horseplayers forget about how much luck it takes to win a 20-horse race sometimes…

Giacomo certainly took a ridiculous dive in price after winning the Derby, but Charismatic was still an awesome overlay at ~8-to-1 in his Preakness.
Real Quiet paid OK in his Preakness, Point Given was favored over Monarchos in their Preakness, and Peace Rules was nearly favored over Funny Cide in their Preakness.

I didn’t have the time to go back and check the charts before I made my statement, but in my mind it always seemed that the Derby winner took a bigger nose dive than they apparently did.
I guess I’m just remembering Mike Battaglia and Bob Neumeier jumping on the bandwagon…
