Cede the Crown

The Triple Crown? It’s a done deal for super Big Brown:

“He’s the right horse at the right time. Confident, cool and awesome. A freak. And a dream.” – Rick Maese
“That stretch run was, dare we say, reminiscent of Secretariat’s history-making triumph in the Belmont Stakes in 1973, when he streaked off to wrap up the Triple Crown.” – Ray Kerrison
“He is special, blessed, not mortal. It’s not fair to the other horses. Racing him is like giving Pete Sampras three serves, letting Wilt play on a seven-foot basket, fighting Ali with one hand.” – Bill Dwyre
“Everyone’s been waiting for the next Secretariat-type horse, and we got him. He’s going to do it.” – Bob Baffert
“No living, breathing being is beating Big Brown. Only an act of God, or a balky starting gate or a soft spot on his dirt on the Belmont track, can keep the winner of the first two legs of the Triple Crown from closing the deal three Saturdays from now.” – David Steele
“That horse from Japan, Casino Drive, will be waiting for us, but he can’t beat our horse. All the Japanese people coming here for the race thought Godzilla was dead. They’re going to find out he’s not dead.” – Rick Dutrow

Meanwhile, Andrew Beyer plays spoilsport. At least one commentator is keeping a little perspective …

I’m so glad to see Dutrow frame Big Brown vs. Casino Drive with his typical cultural sensitivity.

Let’s let him win it first. Remember many a horse has gone down in that long final stretch at Belmont — Empire Maker, Funny Cide, Smarty Jones, Curlin (to Rags to Riches last year) and how can we be so certain Big Brown won’t. Horses do strange things. The one reason I think Big Brown has an advantage over horses like Funny Cide and Smarty Jones is that Big Brown ran so easy in the Preakness, while Smarty Jones and Funny Cide ran very hard in the Preakness and maybe left nothing in the tank. Big Brown left plenty in the Tank.

Empire Maker defeated Funny Cide. It was the third-largest win bet I ever made, and I prefer to remember it because I lost the two largest ones I’ve ever made. :(

Does this mean we get monster minus pools to bet against BB on Belmont day and lose again?
Yipppeeeeee. I love betting against this horse. It’s been great tearing up my tickets after the first quarter of every race.
Not at any step of any of the last 3 races has BB winning been in any doubt. Maybe Prado boxing him in did for a half a second, but even then Prado had no accomplices to join in the fun of trying.
Trying to picture what type of race shape needs to happen for a shot to beat BB. Serious rabbits with a stated purpose? Collusion by jocks to work as a team to keep running in waves at BB? The possibility that Casion Drive is even a bigger feak with only 2 races? Belmont itself?
Since the Belmont will surely be his last race, do we see no holding back? The true ability of this horse?
If an allowance race in March doesn’t come off the turf, are we even talking about any of this?
I’ll still try to bet against in three weeks with just on principle. I want to see the horse win now though and inspite of my disdain for his connections the worse part is that there’s been no serious challenge. No one has looked this horse in the eye yet. No War Pass moment. This is what racing really needs. A little adversity for this horse to overcome.
