Dear Bill Finley
Are you kidding? Send Big Brown to the Arc?
Yes, obviously, based on … what, exactly?

Wait a minute. Winning the Kentucky Derby and Preakness don’t bestow class and quality anymore? Am I missing something? I don’t care how much we malign the fields, those races mark excellence in this country. I like Bill’s idea a lot. And who’s to say Big Brown can’t get better, grow up even more, as the year goes on? If Big Brown is not an incredibly talented horse, I’ve learned nothing in twenty-plus years watching this game. Viva la France! (Or is it “le” France?)

Of course winning the Kentucky Derby and Preakness bestows quality and class. I wouldn’t argue that Big Brown isn’t tops in his division and couldn’t beat older horses in this country later in the year, but I just do not see him showing well against a bunch of the top horses in the world this fall. Send him to France … and watch him finish behind Zarkava, Soldier of Fortune, Yeats. Incredibly talented, sure. Ready for that kind of competition, no way. It’d be an awesome thing to see him try next year … oh wait, he’ll be in the breeding shed.

Speaking of the breeding shed, nice to see Heatseeker retired. We certainly can’t have any decent older horses lingering around, now, can we?

Big Brown wouldn’t beat Curlin on turf or dirt or in an alley. Big Brown beat Maidens in a turf race so lets not make him out to be a super turf horse. Curlin is a solid 4yr old and Big Brown would have do do an awful lot to beat him at the end of the year. And then you’ll hear Dutrow and his whole classless team say that Curlin is ducking Big Brown, when Curlin’s connections have been on line for their plans for the rest of the year. If Big Brown went to the Arc, the Europeans then would think we are stupid.
