Plonk’s Pipe Dream

Jeremy Plonk lays out a year of racing with staggered meets, staggered post times in his latest ESPN column:

Circuit Jan-Feb Mar-Apr May-Jun
Early 1 Gulfstream Aqueduct Belmont
Early 2 Philly Park Oaklawn Churchill Downs
Early 3 Fair Grounds Delaware Park Pimlico
Mid 1 Hollywood Santa Anita Fairplex
Mid 2 Sunland Park Zia Park Hawthorne
Night 1 Retama Penn National Presque Isle
Night 2 Mountaineer Hoosier Park Lone Star
Night 3 Prairie Meadows Evangeline Indiana Downs
Circuit Jul-Aug Sept-Oct Nov-Dec
Early 1 Saratoga Calder Hawthorne
Early 2 Monmouth Keeneland Tampa
Early 3 Arlington Laurel Suffolk
Mid 1 Del Mar Oak Tree Golden Gate
Mid 2 Ellis Park Louisiana Downs Turf Paradise
Night 1 Colonial Downs Canterbury Downs Turfway Park
Night 2 Remington Meadowlands Sam Houston
Night 3 Delta Downs Ruidoso Downs Charles Town

Beautiful, except that the Belmont fall championship meet is missing, and relegating Suffolk Downs to winter racing seems harsh. What about the MassCap?

Never mind Belmont and Suffolk. What is tragic is the lack of Chicago racing until June.
But I guess less is more.

The number of racing days and races peaked out 20 years ago and has been trending downward since then.
Since it’s fantasy time, I guess my calender would have no racing in the USA at all from Thanksgiving through mid-January. Just shut it down. Heck, most jocks shut it down during this period.
This would be part of the re-positioning racing as sport. I can’t think of many ‘pro’ sports that are active 12 months, 364 a year as racing is.

Yeah, I’d rather see no racing from after Thanksgiving weekend to Mid January and a few more meets than Plonk has listed during “the season”.

Sorry to be a poop, but no racing in December? I want California, Florida and Maryland racing that time of year.

I agree with John. We can reposition it as a sport, but let’s gamble on some in the Winter.

I’m agnostic on the winter/no-winter racing question, but a couple things I do like about this schedule is that it eliminates year-round NY racing and unifies CA racing. I like the idea of NY closing up for a while — it makes the return in spring and the shifting meets through the rest of the year more special — and thinking of the CA circuit as one.

Are you using Agnostic with the non committal definition?
BTW–As always a great stop and read!!
Pete, I was using agnostic to mean uncommitted/unsure. Thanks for reading! It’s a pleasure to count you among my visitors. — Jessica
