“Where did that son of a bitch come from?”

Excuse the profanity — Gary Stevens was feeling shocked after the 1993 Breeders’ Cup Classic. The rider had been on favored Bertrando, in front from the start and seemingly on his way to a win mid-stretch, when the unknown European longshot Arcangues — an anxious horse with a bad back and funny name — passed them on the outside, scoring the biggest upset in BC history. Arcangues paid $269 to win, and jockey Jerry Bailey — introduced to the horse only in the paddock — had a reason to learn (some) French:

It was revealed on Wednesday that Arcangues was euthanized in Japan, where he stood stud from 1995, due to complications from founder in October 2006.
